The significant outage lost Facebook billions on the stock market and made businesses that run on their platforms vulnerable to losses. Facebook’s data center issue shook the world, and a smaller Instagram outage a few days later highlighted how vulnerable we are to any disruption in our connectivity. And this isn’t the first time. Who could forget Fastly’s outage earlier this year that affected sites including Reddit, eBay, and The New York Times?...

Over the past few years, articles and blog posts have started to ask some version of the same question: “Why are all websites starting to look the same?” These posts usually point out some common design elements, from large images with superimposed text, to hamburger menus, which are those three horizontal lines that, when clicked, reveal a list of page options to choose from. My colleagues Bardia Doosti, David Crandall, Norman Su and I were studying the history of the web when we started to notice these posts cropping up....

According to the researchers at website security company Sucuri, the plugins are also being used to maintain access to compromised servers. It seems their use has increased in recent months. Essentially, the components are clones of the legitimate software, which have been altered for illicit purposes, making them relatively easy for hackers to create. Attackers have been using different names for these fake plugins, including ‘initiatorseo’ or ‘updrat123,’ the researchers said....

While the firm has submitted documents for an initial public offering (IPO), it hasn’t determined the number of shares, proposed price range, or even a date for going public just yet. The company has filed for IPO under confidentiality, which allows it to keep some information under wraps. Analysts suggest that the firm is currently valued at $12 billion, and the IPO could push its valuation to over $20 billion....

Robinhood is offering a total of 55,000,000 shares of its class A common stock. Apart from stocks from the company, this lot also contains 2,625,000 shares from existing shareholders, and 5,500,000 for underwriters with a 30-day option. In May, the company unveiled a new platform to let you can buy into IPOs of other firms. Robinhood plans to offer almost a third of its own IPO shares to its users through that medium....

According to government officials, the software is expected to launch by Thursday, BBC reports. The move coincides with a larger initiative between European health institutions to create a network of virus-tracking apps that communicate with each other. The UK and Germany are purportedly working on similar solutions, too. Citing a report from the Korean site ChosunBiz, Sammobile said that Samsung is considering removing both the wall charger and earphones from the upcoming Galaxy S21’s box. Apple kept the iPhone 12’s price the same as last year’s models and charged the official cable from USB-A to USB-C with the lightning port on the other end. So, in case you didn’t own a charging brick with a USB-C port, you needed to buy one separately....

CNET reports that Samsung is gearing up to unveil its Galaxy Note 10 phone on August 7 at the Barclays Center in New York. That lines up with the Korean firm’s usual annual schedule for Galaxy Note launches – but it’s possible that the date might change, seeing as how August is still a while away. I usually don’t care for this range of giant stylus-equipped handsets, but the rumors surrounding the Note 10 have my interest piqued....
