While the Indian government hasn’t explicitly banned the platform, it’s now keen on creating its own video conferencing app. The center has launched a program for Indian tech companies to come up with an encrypted video conferencing solution that works on all platforms. The government has asked companies to register for the project by April 30. By the end of three phases of the program, one team will get ₹1 crore ($130,255) to develop the app....

The country’s government is now inspecting to ban 275 more China-originated apps including popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s BattleGround (PUBG) and ByteDance’s music app Resso. According to a report from the Economic Times, government officials have created a list of 275 apps that might be violating security measures and user privacy. Apart from PUBG and Resso, the list includes ecommerce app AliExpress from Alibaba and photo-sharing app ULike. India moved to ban 59 Chinese apps after more than 20 of its soldiers were killed in a skirmish at the border with the neighboring country....

Last year, a committee formed under justice BN Krisha submitted a draft bill to the government, which sparked heated discussions. One of the primary topics was an intermittent liability that held platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Google liable for content distributed on their platform. The new version, to be tabled in parliament today by minister RS Prasad, also has relaxed norms on data localization. It doesn’t force companies to store data locally and allows free flow of data across borders....

However, a petition filed by People’s Union for Civil Liberties, a non-profit, revealed that six years after the judgment, police stations across the country had filed more than 1,500 cases under this scrapped act. Given the act’s nature, it’s easy to incriminate anyone by accusing them of storing false information with an intention of dangerous activities. Before the law was struck down, miscreants used it to file cases against folks speaking out against the prime minister, making cartoons about the parliament, or criticizing the state government....

The entity said in a statement that it was notified about the incident by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) on September 4, noting its plant systems had not been affected: According to the statement, only one of the administrative computers was affected. It is speculated that this D-track type of malware is the same as that used by North Korean hackers to target Indian ATM systems in September. The matter was immediately investigated by DAE specialists....

Also, one of my biggest annoyances with Reels was that I had to go to the Explore tab and find these short videos amongst other posts. I tried it a couple of times and then gave up. At the launch, I asked why it didn’t have a separate tab for Reels, when short video had become such an engaging category. In response, Vishal Shah, VP of Product at Instagram, said the Explore tab was the natural choice for Reels, as it was how more than half of all users discovered content on the platform....

Researchers from AlgorithmWatch and the European Data Journalism Network made the discovery by analyzing Instagram newsfeeds, talking to content creators, and studying patents. The team asked 26 volunteers to install a browser add-on that automatically opens their Instagram homepage at regular intervals, and records which posts appear at the top of their newsfeeds. The volunteers then followed a selection of professional content creators who use Instagram to advertise their brands or attract new clients....

Instead, after said message, you’ll now see suggested posts from other accounts by default – including ads, of course. The clickjacking bug was discovered on August 30 by Google Project Zero researcher Tavis Ormandy, who is part of the white-hat hacker group devoted to finding bugs in software.
