In the programming world, few aspects seem as inescapable as the infamous coding bootcamps. One way or another, you’ll hear about them: From scanning through your best friend’s resume to checking your LinkedIn feed, you’ll eventually come across a glimmering Bootcamp diploma with titles such as “Full Stack Ninja” or “DevOps Swiss Knife.” Bootcamps, which claim to be short, intensive training plans that will teach you programming skills, seem too good to be true....

To manufacture all this concrete, more than 4 billion tonnes of cement are produced every year. According to the Chatham House think tank, that creates around 8% of all CO2 emissions — more than what’s caused by all the trucks across the globe. The tax will still need to be confirmed by lawmakers in parliament, but if it goes through, the Czech Republic would join other EU countries that are trying to rein in international tech giants with stricter taxation. In tandem with the expansion of deep learning in various domains and applications, there has been a growing interest in developing techniques that try to explain neural networks by examining their results and learned parameters. But these explanations are often erroneous and misleading, and they provide little guidance in fixing possible misconceptions embedded in deep learning models during training. In a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Machine Intelligence, scientists at Duke University propose “concept whitening,” a technique that can help steer neural networks toward learning specific concepts without sacrificing performance....

Deepfakes are videos in which a subject’s face or body has been digitally altered to make them look like someone else – usually a famous person. One notable example is the @deeptomcriuse TikTok account, which has posted dozens of deepfake videos impersonating Tom Cruise and attracted some 3.6 million followers. In another example, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to be confessing to conspiratorial data sharing. More recently there have been a number of silly videos featuring actors such as Robert Pattinson and Keanu Reeves....

The streaming service has developed an AI technique that automatically detects explicit lyrics — just by analyzing the audio. Of course, a human could do the job, but that can be a lot of work, as podcaster Adam Buxton discovered when he valiantly tried to censor serial offenders NWA. Another problem is that record companies aren’t always as diligent as Buxton. Deezer says they can’t always be relied on to add an “explicit content” tag to the foul-mouthed songs that they submit to streaming services....
