Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison investigated “many popular apps” to determine the extent that video conferencing apps capture data while users employ the in-software ‘mute’ button. According to a university press release, their findings were substantial: Unfortunately, as this research remains unpublished, we’re unable to confirm the specific apps tested. So, for now, we can’t name and shame them. They found that all of the apps they tested occasionally gather raw audio data while mute is activated, with one popular app gathering information and delivering data to its server at the same rate regardless of whether the microphone is muted or not....

I tend to look at Slack, email, and (sigh) Twitter right after I wake up. But sometimes I wonder if my head would be clearer if I just… didn’t. So I tried it out — and asked my coworkers at Zapier to join me. I didn’t set hard rules, but I did offer some suggestions. Pick a time, then don’t look at your screen until then. That data is now available for visual artists in the form of a 3D map with depth information. The space agency released the map in September, but, was highlighted by TechCrunch last Saturday. LRO uses two main instruments to capture surface data of the moon: a multispectral camera and a laser altimeter. The camera captures images of different parts of the moon based on its position in the oribit, and the altimeter captures the topology of the surface....

The space agency has selected two new missions to Venus that are expected to launch between 2028 and 2030. They will study why a planet with a similar mass, size, and composition to our own turned into a blazing hellhole, while Earth became fractionally more hospitable. The first mission, named Davinci+, will analyze Venus’ dense atmosphere and determine whether it ever had an ocean. It will also take pictures of geologic features known as tesserae, which NASA believes could be similar to Earth’s continents, suggesting the planet has plate tectonics....

Developed by researchers Dr. Behzad Nematollahi and Professor Jay Sanjayan, the new concrete is produced largely from waste materials – such as fly ash, a byproduct of coal power. According to Dr. Nematollahi, it uses “about 36 percent less energy” while emitting “up to 76 percent less carbon dioxide” than conventional bendable concrete. Nintendo of Japan recently released a statement saying it will no longer repair the aging console beginning March 31. The company is essentially running out of parts, which presumably aren’t being made anymore; the company says it might not be able to repair your system if parts have run out before that date. The company’s American and European branches haven’t yet said when they’d follow suit, but at this point, it’s only a matter of time....

Now, Nissan has teamed up with Mitsubishi to launch in 2022 a mini EV, especially made for the Japanese auto market. What is a mini vehicle? The so-called “minivehicle” is under 3.4 meters long, 1.4 meters wide, and 1.6 meters high, meaning that it’s well- suited to Japan’s cramped urban traffic. It’s designed as a four-seater, but, based on its dimensions, we can’t expect too much interior space. According to Nissan’s press release, It’s said to have a 20kWh battery capacity, which sounds a bit small compared to current EV standards at 60-100kWh....

The survey is from BroadbandNow, and covers responses from 943 participants. Their info suggests that almost six million gamers (out of around 34 million estimated to play at least 22 hours a week) would quickly blast through their data caps if they were to switch to Google Stadia as their primary device. Given that Stadia is estimated to require up to 15.75 GB of data for every hour of 4K streaming — a feature Stadia’s hypepeople have been very quick to tout, I might add — we already knew it was going to be a hog, but putting a number to the people who’re going to have to pay overages for using Stadia is still galling....

As part of a new six-month pilot program, 50 city fleet vehicles are fitted with active intelligent speed assistance (ISA), which restricts a vehicle’s maximum speed, preventing it from exceeding local speed limits. If successful, the City of New York will extend the initiative across the City’s entire 30,000 vehicle fleet, which includes fire engines, police cars, sanitation trucks, street pavers, and passenger vehicles, spread across 60 agencies. At the launch event, however, Mayor Adams clarified that emergency vehicles and his own vehicle are exempted from the technology, “But how my vehicles are used is determined by the police department dealing with the safety apparatus....

In case you haven’t been party to the madness, there have been persistent rumors that Nintendo is working on a third Switch model. This hypothetical sibling to the Switch Classic and the Switch Lite was thought to be a “Switch Pro.” This would have been more of a souped-up model, with support for higher resolutions and a more powerful CPU. United States prosecutors told the jury of the ongoing OneCoin investigation that Mark Scott — the lawyer that ran some of the OneCoin’s accounts — recieved a $50 million fee for laundering $400 million worth of funds, Law360 reports. “It’s staggering,” said prosecutor Nicholas Folly. Scott, who is a former partner at legal firm Locke Lord, is being accused of using a series of fake companies, offshore accounts, and fraudulent schemes to launder the $400 million on Ignatova’s behalf between the end of 2015 and mid-2017....

MIT Technology Review’s Karen Hao published a piece on the lab this week that depicts a company buckling under the weight of its grand ambition. Over three days at OpenAI’s office, Hao discovered “a misalignment between what the company publicly espouses and how it operates behind closed doors”.
